The Department

Mount Sinai Fire Department is an all volunteer organization formed in 1930 for the protection of life and property from fire and other emergencies. This protection is provided to the Mount Sinai Fire District, an area of about five and one half square miles. The Fire District covers a large area.  Responsibilities include Mount Sinai Harbor as a north border, Canal Road on the south, and from Pipe Stave Hollow Road on the east to Crystal Brook Hollow Road on the west. The department also participates in mutual aid and rapid intervention agreements with neighboring departments.

The department currently has eighty firefighters and is always seeking new members. Training provided is extensive and no prior experience is necessary.

Technical Rescue Team

In March of 1995 three Mount Sinai firefighters began training for what would eventually become a highly specialized emergency rescue force. John Purcell, John Spates and Tony Tricarico received state certification attesting to their expertise as high angle/confined space rescue personnel. They were joined in October of 1996 by firefighters Todd Barraud, James Hansen and Charles Holomshek. Together they are now the Mount Sinai Fire Department Technical Rescue Team

The mission of the team would be the rescue of people trapped in situations involving limited access. Members have been trained to perform rescues from below grade, such as cave-ins, and from areas with toxic atmospheres. They are capable of high angle rescues that will bring victims down from places unreachable by the usual ladder techniques.

The need for the intensive training given to teams of this nature is evident in many past incidents in which rescuers became victims. One such incident was an attempt to rescue a worker from a 43 foot deep well in Bristol, New Hampshire. Three firefighters were killed trying to rescue one worker. The worker also died. In Lancaster, Pennsylvania one firefighter and two paramedics died while attempting a rescue from a septic tank. Studies of deaths resulting from permit required confined spaces have shown that as many as sixty percent of the casualties are those attempting the rescue.

In light of the dangers involved in these rescue efforts all members of the team have undergone extensive training at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. This training includes instruction and drills in over thirty different aspects of confined space/high angle rescue including:

Mount Sinai's team has also been active in the formation of the Northern Brookhaven Technical Rescue Taskforce (NBTRT). This task force is composed of confined space rescue teams from Centereach, Mount Sinai, Port Jefferson, Setauket, Stony Brook, and Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance Corps along with the State University of New York at Stony Brook's Department of Health and Safety. They are developing a command system and guidelines which will standardize procedures to be followed during a rescue. This will allow a coordinated response from a large base of trained personnel. The members of the task force train every three months as a unit in addition to their training as individual department rescue teams.

The need for this type of specialized rescue unit is evident; but making time for all the training necessary is difficult in this busy world. Therefore we are especially thankful that our firefighters and those in the other departments have given so much of their valuable time to create the Mount Sinai Confined Space and High Angle Rescue Unit and the Northern Brookhaven Technical Rescue Task Force.

The Dive Team

Several years ago our Fire Department was fortunate to have enlisted a new member that was a certified PDIC dive instructor. Soon after the Mt. Sinai Fire Department Dive Team was launched with member /instructor Charlie Holomshek at the helm and under direction of Chief Jim Trappen. The team quickly grew to about sixteen members and the training became intense, currently, the Team Leader is Jim McMahon. Thanks to all members involved, we now have a team that is qualified and ready for any deep water emergency that may occur in Mt.Sinai harbor or the Long Island sound.
